Dental students have always experienced varying levels of stress during the educational process. In recent years, however, there is evidence that students have increased need for professional career guidance and other personal support. In 2020, the American College of Dentists Regency 1 Leadership Summit heard from students in the New England dental schools that they would welcome additional opportunities for them to discuss their concerns, including indebtedness, career guidance, work-life balance, and personal issues.

This panel presentation program hosted by Regency 1 of the American College of Dentists is a planned sequel to those initial discussion and will include representation from national leaders in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), American College of Dentists (ACD), Student Professional Ethics Association (SPEA) and local and regional dental school students and faculty members.

The intent of this panel discussion program is to provide a platform for students to highlight and share the major personal and professional questions and concerns they have with the ever-expanding student loan indebtedness burden and the consequential professional and life-style choices they must make in order to manage their large educational indebtedness once they leave school.

Among the topics to be discussed will be what the dental education community, organized dentistry, and the marketplace are doing to address the realities of student points of view on dental school education and its corresponding costs, and exploring career opportunities commensurate with a life-style the students aspire to which takes indebtedness into account.  In addition, experts focus on how to manage the student debt repayment options, the professional choices students have to make to incur more debt for specialized study, personal life choices--including home buying and purchasing or starting a practice.

Program Objectives:
At the end of this Session, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the concerns of dental students and new graduates if offering associateship positions
  2. Understand strategies for planning student indebtedness
  3. Explore opportunities for the dental education community to create ongoing venues for students to share concerns in order to show guidance or to resolve student concerns
  4. Leadership by the dental education community to advocate for structural changes in federal loan programs
  5. Support student initiatives to improve quality of life during dental school
